Every month, we’ll be profiling a different member of the Hamilton Blake Consulting team on the company blog. A business is so much more than the sum of its parts, so we want our clients, partners, and prospects to get to know the amazing people that make our work possible.
Today, we’re chatting to Kieran McRae: one of our Tax Associates, who joined the company back in October 2020. Over to you, Kieran…
Can you tell us a bit about your role: how do you fit into the company, and what does your day-to-day work look like?
I work most closely with Darryl on a range of different direct tax projects. Most of our work covers areas such as personal tax problems relating to sales of assets or shares, as well as dealing with company tax issues surrounding restructures and demergers.
My day-to-day workload can vary a lot, depending on the type of project that has come in. But my usual process starts with doing some research and looking at legislation and sometimes case law and making notes. I will then begin to write a report or note for the client which will include the relevant legislation and how it applies to their case. Darryl and I will then go through this together before it is sent to the client. Usually, we then arrange a call with the client to go through any queries they may have and where applicable we will outline the next steps to continue with the project.
What did you do before working at Hamilton Blake?
This is my first role out of education, after finishing my Master’s degree in Mathematics at the University of Manchester last summer.
What is your favourite part of your role?
There are a lot of things I enjoy about the role. I like that it’s a new challenge, and I like the wide variety of work that I deal with and the people I work with. I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do coming straight out of university, the only thing I knew was I wanted to continue learning and be challenged on a daily basis, and this role definitely satisfies that. Every day is completely different, and I have a wide exposure to a range of different tax problems.
How do you unwind after a long day at work?
Since we’re still in lockdown, my nights consist of a lot Netflix and gaming with my friends. Hopefully when the weather improves, I will be able to get out more and start jogging again.
What does your perfect weekend look like?
My perfect weekend would involve probably quite a lot of sport, mainly football, with a Manchester United win (and Norwich to keep my girlfriend happy). Ideally, the world would have returned to some form of normality and I would be able to go explore more of Norfolk as I have only recently moved to Thetford.
Thank you, Kieran! We’ll be profiling another member of the team next month, so watch this space!
